We trust you share your faith through: Praying together, helping your child memorize formal prayers, attending Mass as a family Being familiar with what your child is learning Giving priority to class over other activities Religious Education is a lifelong process Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit Each of us comes to know God through prayer Learning and the application of Scripture to daily life | | | | Religious Education Instructors | | Religious Education instructors participate to the fullest extent possible in meetings, seminars, institutes and workshops made available to them. All instructors are called to exhibit Christian living in accordance with Catholic doctrine. Within the calendar year, in-service time is provided in order that the catechists can prepare for their teaching. All religious instructors of the programs in the parish (excluding priests, religious education directors and teachers of St. Joseph School) are volunteers. Members of the parish are welcome and encouraged to participate in the program. There is a continual need for assistance in various areas within the program. | | | | Religious Education Board | | The Religious Education Board is composed of parishioners who help provide direction and consultation to the Religious Education Director. They sponsor events such as Mass With My Class, Family Book Corner, Faith Fair and Catholic Kids Club (explained below under PROGRAMS). The Youth Ministry Board is composed of high school students and adult parishioners who help provide direction and consultation to the Youth Minister. For more information call the Religious Education Office at 971-1740. | | | | Family Life | These organizations seek ways to provide enrichment to families and parishioners. You are invited to call concerning these programs. Watch the parish bulletin and information that will be sent home regarding this. PROGRAMS LITURGY OF THE WORD (Children ages 4 through 10) Sunday, during the first part of the 8:45 am and the 10:30 am Mass, for all children of the parish. Children hear the Word of God and respond to it with the facilitation of an adult leader. MASS WITH MY CLASS (grades 3 through 6) Children of the parish are invited to participate in the 5:00pm regular Sunday Mass with their classmates and families. Children serve as greeters, candle and banner bearers, choir members, readers and ushers. Families join together for a casual meal in the church hall following the Mass.
FAMILY BOOK CORNER
During the school year, books and related religious goods appropriate for Catholic children and families are sold in the church narthex following Sunday morning services. Any proceeds benefit the parish.
FAITH FAIR Held annually, typically in April, in the church hall. Parish children (school, religious education or home-study) are asked to create and submit for display an item (picture, poem) expressing their faith. Families are invited to view the projects and register their children for upcoming programs (Catholic Kids Camp, Religious Ed classes, etc.) Refreshments are served; books and religious items such as rosaries, prayer books and First Communion goods are sold. The 2003 event will also include a show put on by the pre-school students.
CATHOLIC KIDS CLUB
Held for one week in June on the parish grounds, this is St. Joseph's
version of Vacation Bible Camp. Kids 4-12 can share their faith through
games, crafts, songs and activities facilitated by adult leaders and teen
helpers. See the Bulletin for updates.
SUNDAY RE Pre-Kindergarten - Grade 1 Sunday (10:30-11:30 am) for all parish children. Children meet at the school to be nourished through bible stories, singing and activities.
Registration required. GRADES 1-6 Wednesday or Thursday (4:00-5:15 pm) Through the use of a textbook, trained teachers, and audio visuals, children experience and learn of the Trinity, prayer, scripture, sacraments, church, moral code, seasons of the church year, and peace and justice. HOME STUDY (Family Catechesis) An alternative program where parents work with their children at home under the direction of the Director of Religious Education. STUDENT PROGRESS One on one communication between parents and teachers is essential to understanding the needs of each child. Parents are always welcome to visit classrooms and are encouraged to do so often during the year. STUDENT BEHAVIOR We affirm students whose behavior is respectful of learning. If a child is disruptive and interferes with the rights of others, the procedure ordinarily followed is: The catechist reconciles the problem directly with the student when possible. If a problem continues, the student meets with the Director of Religious Education or the Director of Youth Ministry. If the above is ineffective, a conference including the child, teacher and parents will result. It may be deemed necessary to withdraw the child from the classroom if behavior warrants such action. See Handbook. GENERAL PROCEDURES If weather conditions necessitates classes be canceled, an announcement will be made on the local radio/TV stations (AM WMAQ, WGN, WBBM; FM: WLS, B96, US99; TV: 32). ATTENDANCE Continued religious instruction throughout all programs and classes is offered. In order to receive continuity and full development, consistent attendance is required. Any substantial absence will require appropriate make-up of religious education. A CALL BY A PARENT TO THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION OFFICE (971-1740) IS REQUIRED FOR ABSENTEEISM. Arrival on time for class assures students and teachers of the full benefit of instructional time. At the end of the class, please pick up your child promptly. If there is a problem, please call the Religious Education Office. TRANSPORTATION Ordinarily, parents arrange transportation for their child. However, if help is needed, please call the Religious Education Office. We will attempt to help you arrange transportation.
