Second Grade Teacher, Kate Rozylowicz
Receives DG Junior Woman's Club Teacher of the Year Award!
A quick glance in Kate Rozylowicz' classroom might make you think her students are learning to conduct a symphony! What you'd be seeing is something called handwriting ballet, an activity Rozylowicz created to bring some fun to learning cursive! Listen closely and you'd hear music from the Nutcracker or Swan Lake. Watch and you'd see hands and pencils flying through the air. Smiling faces all around!
This is just one reason Alex Fosket nominated his second grade teacher for the Downers Grove Junior Woman's Club Teacher of the Year Award. When writing of handwriting ballet, Alex wrote, "...that makes boring stuff fun!"
Second grade is a sacred year filled with Sacraments. It is a special year of witnessing for our
St. Joseph second grade teachers. It is also a year to create a solid base for students to grow on. Making it fun can only be a positive for our second graders!
Along with handwriting ballet, Alex also finds 'regrouping plays' fun. Rozylowicz helps her students create plays complete with backdrops, costumes and props. Her students act out two of their reading books, "Why the Lizard Stretches His Neck" and "Brementown Musicians."
Alex appreciates his teacher who asks her students to be nice to each other & make sure no one is by themselves at lunch. She also helps her students celebrate their half-birthdays, which gives her students with summertime birthdays a day to share with classmates. Rozylowicz' class is also learning to share with those in need, particularly with the troops in Iraq where her son is stationed. Pulling all these reasons together helped Alex give the gift of this teaching award to his special teacher.
