We are excited to announce that St. Joseph School will start a Cross Country team this Fall of 2011.  Below is information on the new team.  We hope that many kids come out and enjoy running.   During the month of August, your child can still join the team.

  1. Practices:  Start Monday, August 8, 2011.  Practices will be from 5:15 to 6:15pm three days per week (not 4:30 to 5:30 as previously announced).   Mondays and Wednesdays at O’Brien Park, Fridays at Whitlock Park.  This is subject to the coaches’ work schedule.  Have your child bring a water bottle.
  2. Participants: Boys and Girls, 5th to 8th grade at St. Joe’s.  This will be a no-cut, co-ed team, similar to the Track team in the Spring.
  3. Coaches:  Tom Kelly, Jeff Gentile, Judy Flavin, and Maggie Sluzas.
  4. CC t-shirtCost:  $20 per St. Joe child to cover the league and the T shirt costs.  The children keep their shirts at the end of the season.
  5. Parents Meeting:  Was on Monday, July 25, at 7pm, in the school cafeteria. If you missed it, just call or email one of the coaches with your questions.
  6. Forms: Download the Cross Country Registration form and the standard IHSA Physical form or get them from the coaches.  The Registration and Physical forms must be turned in before your child attends his/her first Cross Country practice.  The IHSA Physical forms were also part of the May registration package for all sports at St. Joe’s.
  7. Two sport participants:  A&B is fine with having kids play two sports, such as volleyball and cross country or football and cross country.  If there is a conflict with practice or game/race times, Volleyball and Football take precedence.
  8. t-shirtPhilosophy:  Cross Country is about fitness, nutrition, conditioning for other sports, and having lots of fun.   Slow, medium, or fast, we will help your children run the best times they can and set personal records over the 8 week season from early August to early October.
  9. Race distances:  5th grade, 1 mile.  6th grade, 1.5 miles.  7th and 8th grade, 2 miles.
  10. Race Dates:
    1. Montini Invitational pre-season meet: probably Tuesday, August 30, 2011
    2. League Meets are on five consecutive Saturdays:
      1. 9/3 – in Warrenville at  Summerlakes Park/Johnson School, hosted by St. Irene’s
      2. 9/10 – at Lyons Township High School, hosted by St. Isaac Jogue’s.
      3. 9/17 – at Marmion Academy in Aurora, hosted by St. Joan of Arc.
      4. 9/24 – at Downers Grove Swim and Racquet Club, hosted by St. Mary of Gostyn
      5. 10/1 – SPL Championship Meet held at Lombard Commons, hosted by St. Petronille.
