Extracurricular Programs

Extracurricular activities make a school come alive. St. Joseph School offers a wealth of activites and events that allow students to display their talents and skills outside the academic arena. Student Council provides leadership opportunities for students and volunteer service to the school community. Sports, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Band, School Choir and Altar Servers round out the offerings. All contribute to make St. Joseph School an exciting place to learn, worship and participate.

In addition to these activities, our seventh and eighth graders prepare for Confirmation through their service hours. As they play bingo with senior citizens, make applesauce for the sick and hungry or clean the church in preparation for the coming of Christ at Christmas and Easter, these students are often surprised at the feeling of warmth and fellowship they receive by helping others that are less fortunate.

Student Council — School spirit is promoted by helping to further school goals including community service. Open to students in fifth through eighth grades, the council organizes activities, such as school dances and food drives for needy families.

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts—Troops are available to students beginning in kindergarten.

No-Cut Sports Programs—Offered to students in fifth through eighth grades, teams include: Boys’ Football, Girls’ Volleyball, Boys and Girls Basketball, Co-ed Volleyball and Track. Instructional volleyball & basketball are offered to the lower grades.

Music Program —The Music Curriculum includes the Liturgical Choir, Handbell Choir as well as the School Band and Piano lessons. Music is taught every week to all classes. There are two recitals per year, one at Christmas time, and one in the spring for VIP Day. Mrs. Mary Schmitt is the music teacher and Director of the two recitals.

Environment Club—Fourth and fifth graders learn about the environment and participate in ecological projects.

Recycling - The children are encouraged to recycle both in the classroom and at lunchtime. The goal of the program is to educate and inspire the children on ways to protect our environment, and to empower the school community to act responsibly as caretakers of all the earth’s resources under their control.

Altar Servers - Students in fifth through eighth grades are eligible to be altar servers at school masses, weekend masses as well as weddings and funerals.

Birthday Book Club - Those who wish to donate a book to the library in honor of their birthday are welcome to do so.

Bus Patrol - Specific older students are asked to head bus lines as children wait for their buses and to lead the children to the buses and help them board safely.

Outdoor Education - Outdoor education is a three-day field trip held in sixth grade.

Special Lunch - On specific days (Mondays) pre-ordered lunches from a local restaurant will be available. Forms will be sent home in the Thursday Messenger.

Pizza Days - On almost every Friday during the school year, there will be pizza lunch available in the School Hall. The students do not have to order ahead, they just bring the money to purchase their lunch. See the calendar for those Fridays when lunch will not be served.

Robert Crown Center - Evening programs on human growth and development are scheduled for parents and students in grades 5-8 at the Robert Crown Center for Health Education in Hinsdale. The purposes are: to build communication between parent and child, to present accurate information, and for parents to share their values with their child. Parents are to attend with their own child. A separate fee is required.
