Kindergarten Gak!-making

The Kindergarten class enjoyed its first science experiment in class on September 18 – Gak-making! For starters, they mixed 1/2 cup of glue and 1/2 cup of water in sandwich-size plastic bags, and then added a food coloring of their choice. Then the kids mixed it up – mush, mush, mush! After a good mixing of the glue and water, Borax was added – a powder laundry boost/cleaner – starting with 1/4 cup and mixing it up some more. The mixture then started to bond together and got thick – for watery mixtures, more Borax was added a little at a time, making sure it was well mixed. Mrs. Cherney then drained off any excess water. When the Kindergartners first took the Gak out of their bags, it was STICKY, but the more they played with it, the less sticky it became.

Make this recipe at home for guaranteed fun for the whole family! One word of warning – it will get moldy after a couple of days – however, you’ll have a lot of leftover Borax to make more. And one final important note from Mrs. Cherney – make sure the bags are closed tightly before the kids start mixing and mushing – the Kindergartners had a few explosions in class!
