Opportunities for Involvement

One of the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of being a part of the St. Joseph School family is taking time to become involved. Whether you work inside or outside of the home, there are many ways to show children that you care about their education, teachers and friends.

Whatever your interests may be, St. Joseph School wants you to feel welcome and appreciates your talents. The following includes descriptions of the many opportunities to volunteer. At the end of each school year, a packet will be sent home asking you which committees are of interest. Volunteers must all complete the Protecting God's Children program. If you have any questions in the meantime, please call Mary Durkin (971-9214) or Julie Correll (963-6922).

Volunteer Opportunities

Catholic Schools Week
Help plan and staff various activities during this special week in January.

Environment Club
Facilitate recycling and environmental projects throughout the year with our 5th and 6th grade Club members, which meet after school monthly. You may also help with special Earth Week activities in April. If you can’t make the meetings, parents are needed to gather information on various environmental activities and contests outside of school.

Fun Fair
Organize and staff our annual Fun Fair, which is held on a Saturday in February.

Gift Wrap Sale
Assist with this annual fundraiser in September, with delivery in November. Volunteers collect, collate and distribute orders.

Health Aides
Help with annual vision and hearing screenings, which are usually held during November.

Library
Assist our librarian as needed, especially with the annual reading program and Book Fair.

Liturgy
Work with children who have been chosen to participate in school Masses or other liturgical services. You’ll help the children to get comfortable with being on the altar, speaking in front of an audience and using a microphone. The goal is to give more children the opportunity to participate in our liturgies.

Manna
Sell Manna during school hours (Thursdays) or after select Sunday Masses. Help with pre-orders, distribution, etc. is also needed.

Market Day
Help one Monday a month to set-up and distribute orders. Younger children are welcome.

Thursday Envelope Stuffers
Every Thursday morning, we organize and insert materials into the Thursday envelopes. We hope to have enough volunteers so that your help is needed only once per month. The teachers really appreciate our efforts with this.

Picture Parents
Take/collect photos of your child’s class events and projects. These may be used for publicity purposes, on bulletin boards, in our school yearbook and for the class album. No special photographic ability is required.

Pizza Lunch
Serve, collect money and clean up at Friday pizza lunches throughout the year.

Protect Our Parkways
Supervise student volunteers during an occasional recess to clean up the parkways around the school. Ideally, each class will take a month; a few parents from each class are needed monthly.

Publicity
Prepare school news for the church bulletin, change outside message board, post newspaper clippings on bulletin board at Franklin Street entrance, post information about special activities on bulletin board outside gym, type student honor roll quarterly and inform local newspapers of school happenings.

Publishing Center
Help students type their prewritten stories on computers. With shorter stories, the student types and parents help with grammar, spelling, etc. With longer stories, parents help type and assemble the stories into books.

Room Parents
One Room Parent is needed per class. This individual coordinates classroom parties/events, organizes chaperones for field trips, etc. He/she does not need to be present for every event. Room helpers provide assistance to the Room Parent.

School Supply Store
Staff the Supply Store during lunch on Tuesdays, and help with the annual Spring supplies order.

Service Committee
Work with students to help develop and implement community service projects. Projects in the past have included collecting coats for the needy, helping at senior lunches, baking cookies for bus drivers and crossing guards, etc.

Social
Bake and/or serve at various social functions throughout the year.

VIP Day
Plan and coordinate this popular event, which is usually held in May. You may choose to decorate, serve as a host/hostess, be a hall guide or greeter, etc. This is an opportunity for special people in your child’s life – grandparents, godparents or others – to spend a special day with us at school.

Copy Aides
Copy materials for teachers as needed. Flexible scheduling is available during school hours. Younger children are welcome.
