Do You Know Jesus?

Year A:  Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 4: 12-23

What wonderful role models we have as followers of Christ in today’s Gospel! Peter, Andrew, James and John are invited to follow Christ and help him spread the word of God by doing good works. Jesus tells his followers, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” In other words, stop worrying about the here and now. Instead, think about why we are here - which is to serve God. If our actions are centered on God, then they will be good. In Fr. Jerome’s homily for the Baptism of the Lord (January 13) he spoke of how we are called to be followers of Christ. It’s not enough that Catholic’s “find” God, but we are called to follow God by doing good. It appears in Matthew’s Gospel today that the first four followers of Christ did not even hesitate when asked to follow Jesus. Can you be just as willing? When someone asks for help, will you stop what you’re doing to help that person in need? That is what followers of Christ are asked to do.
