Do You Know Jesus?

Do You Know Jesus
Fourth Sunday of Lent
John 9:1-41
Today John shares with us the story of how Christ gave sight to a blind man. Through Jesus, the blind man received his vision but more importantly he received faith in God. Today’s gospel reminds us that Jesus is the light of the world and we should want others to see Jesus’ goodness in our own actions. The following prayer can help us be like Jesus.
Dear Jesus, I give you my eyes to see others the way you do, I give you my heart to fill with the light of your love. Let your goodness shine out from me so others may see that you are the light of the world.

Office Notes
Important Information Regarding
Changes in Student Physicals for
5th & 6th Grade Students

We have been notified by the State Board of Education and the Illinois Department of Public Health that the physicals required for Students entering Grade 5 has now been changed to Students entering Grade 6.

The letters and forms that were mailed home to the Grade 4 families will not be necessary for the 2008 – 2009 school year. We have been told also that the current 5th grade students will probably NOT need another physical to enter Grade 6 for the 2008 – 2009 year - Thank You

The School Board Corner

Let us introduce you to “The School Board Corner”, which will be a way for the school board to communicate with the school community on a regular basis.

The School Board held a Town Hall meeting on January 29, 2008.  Over 100 people attended during a cold, snowy evening.  Presentations were made by Principal Rita Stasi on Academic Excellence, Vince Barrett on Recruitment and Retention, Kevin Delaplane on School Finances, and Kevin Lynch on The School Mission and on School Board Priorities.  (The presentations are posted here.)   Attendees then broke out into small groups to discuss three topics:  Fundraising and Development, Recruitment and Marketing, and How to Change/Improve St. Joe’s School.  Attendees also filled out a survey on those topics and a few others   Here are the results:

Parents’ Assessment of the School:  The surveys show that overall there is a strong, positive feeling about the school.  There are many reasons given for this, the primary one being the tremendous sense of community that exists among the families at St. Joe’s.  Almost every survey mentioned this.  In addition, people highly value the academic excellence of the school, the integration of Catholic teachings in the classrooms and extra-curricular activities, the commitment of the faculty, and the leadership of Mrs. Stasi and Sr. Dorothy.

Recruitment and Retention of Students:  We currently average 43 students in each grade K through 8, and our goal is to raise the average to closer to 50 students per grade.  To retain and attract more students, academic suggestions include starting a pre-school, adding Spanish to the curriculum, and hiring a special education specialist to help challenged, average, and gifted students to learn more in basic and advanced subjects. Non-academic suggestions include creation and implementation of a 5 year marketing plan (already underway), more communication of the St. Joe community and how it differentiates itself, tuition discounts to current school families for recruitment, and tuition discounts to families of local parishes without schools. The School Board and its Recruitment and Retention Committee are looking at every suggestion. Adding Spanish to the curriculum or as an extra-curricular activity (Mrs. Stasi’s focus) and creating a 5-year marketing plan (School Board and Marketing Committee focus) are the two most viable suggestions at the moment.

We will report more to you about the Town Hall meeting and the surveys in the next two e-Messengers. The School Board, with its committees of Recruitment and Retention, Finance and Development, and Marketing will be communicating more regularly through this medium and others to keep everyone informed about the school’s priorities and finances, fundraising, and a 5 year marketing plan.  It’s an exciting time to be part of the St. Joe’s School community.

Help Needed For Pads Meals (Public Action to Deliver Shelter)
Monday Evenings in March

Each Monday evening during the month of March, St. Joseph Parish will be providing a meal for PADS (shelter is located in the basement of the Church, directly across the street from the Downers Grove library). Approximately 90 homeless are served dinner, a safe night's sleep and breakfast the following morning.

Help is needed to provide either a specific food item for the dinner meal or assist in the kitchen during meal time. Church communities are also asked to provide breakfast foods for the following morning.
If you are willing to help, please call the contact assigned to each meal. We will be looking for entrees, salads, vegetables and desserts for each dinner, as well as bulk eggs, bread, bacon and cereal for each breakfast.

Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
