Do You Know Jesus?

Do You Know Jesus 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Luke 16:19-31

In this Gospel of Luke Jesus is telling a story to the Pharisees about a rich man who knowingly did not share his good fortune with the poor and of a poor sick man who went to heaven after death. From this Gospel we are reminded that we should appreciate all that we have been blessed with, and if able, to share with those who have less. If we willingly choose not to help others, the consequences might be like that of the rich man in this Gospel. Reflect for a moment:
" Why was the rich man unhappy?
" Do you see any signs of redemption for the rich Man?
" What lesson can we learn from this Gospel?
" The Gospel tells us that Lazarus is in Heaven, what choices did he make in his life that led him there?

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR CHILD'S SAFETY FROM LAIDLAW

Drawstrings on jackets, sweatshirts and other clothing items pose a danger to your child.

They can become snagged on school bus handrails or doors, on playground equipment, on escalators or other mechanical equipment. Incidents of snagged drawstrings or toggles have resulted in injuries and even deaths. Laidlaw doesn't want this to happen to your child.

Information campaigns by the National Safety Council, the U.S Department of Transportation, and the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission have caused many clothing manufacturers to eliminate drawstrings from their clothing. But still some remain. We at Laidlaw, in conjunction with your school officials, urge you to inspect all of your children's existing clothing and eliminate these hazards wherever possible.

The simplest solution is to remove or cut the drawstrings from the clothing.

MIDWEST ACADEMIC TALENT SEARCH

If your child scores above the 95% in the Terra Nova Tests you may want to register them to participate in Northwestern University's Midwest Academic Talent Search by registering on line at http://www.ctd.northwestern.edu/mats/
In the past years we sent letters to our sixth graders scoring above the 95%. We are not doing so this year. This notification is a courtesy.

SCHOOL FINANCE UPDATE
As discussed at the recent Meet and Greet nights, the School instituted changes this year in tuition and school family stewardship as part of the new Horizons 2010 Plan. We would like to again thank all the school families for their participation in and tremendous support of these important initiatives.

If your employer has a charitable matching gift program, please inquire if they would match your family's stewardship pledge. These matching gift programs are a great compliment to a family's giving.

BASKETBALL EVALUATIONS
There seem to be many questions about how the basketball evaluations work so we thought it worthwhile to explain the process. We have 4 evaluators for each class and, as a rule, none of the evaluators have children on the teams they are evaluating. In fact, to ensure objectivity, we try to get as many outside evaluators as possible, i.e. former SJS coaches, local high school coaches.

The evaluators rate the players on the following: dribbling, shooting, rebounding, passing, one-on-one, five-on-five, and court sense. The ratings for each player are then totaled and the players that scored in the top half are placed on the A team and the players in the bottom half are placed on the B team. If there is one A team and two B teams, league rules stipulate that the top 1/3 of the players are placed on the A team and the bottom 2/3 are split evenly based on how the players rated. In the unusual case where there are 2 A teams and 2 B teams, the top half of the players are split evenly based on how they scored. The bottom half are split evenly on the 2 B teams.

Once the teams have been determined, we then select the coaches for each team. The coaches are not chosen until the teams have been determined. The reasons that evaluations were earlier than usual this year was because we need to submit the number of teams for the coming year to the league by mid-September and it also gives us more time to find coaches. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Teams will be posted on Sat, 10/13. However, teams for the 5th and 6th grade boys will not be posted until we have had a chance to evaluate the players who were injured at the time of the evaluations. Those players will be evaluated at the boys' class clinics in late-October. Also, please mark your calendars: The mandatory parents' meeting for the basketball is Sun, November 4, at 6 PM in the School Hall (immediately following 5 PM Mass).
