Saint Joseph School of Downers Grove

Mrs. SalekKathie Salek

I have taught at St. Joseph School since 1981. Many times people ask me why someone would teach in the same place for so long. The answer is simple, although multifaceted: I enjoy the students here; I appreciate the support and generosity of the parents; I have seen the commitment of the parish, administration, and staff to Catholic education; and I have a deep respect for all those with whom I have had the pleasure to work.   Although I hate to see summers come to end, I look forward every year to the prospect of new relationships and accomplishments. Over these many years I have taught over 1000 students here and one of my biggest pleasures is hearing from former students (or their parents) about their current academic and personal successes. Hearing about their high school and college achievements, current jobs, marriages and children all bring a smile to my face. Even though I do sometimes forget a face or a name, I’d like to think that some how I added a little something to each of their success. [So, if you’re former students, I’d love to hear from you.]

Since I have been at St. Joseph School, I have always taught 6th grade.  For several years I also taught 5th grade, 7thgrade, and 8th grade in various combinations. Currently, I teach religion to my 6th grade homeroom. I believe that promoting an atmosphere where students feel free to share about their lives and feelings is important to learning about their faith. I teach world history, vocabulary, and literature to all 6th graders. I also teach world geography to 7th graders. Although students are responsible for the content material of these classes, the skills they learn are ones they’ll continue to use for years to come. I currently support a quartet of kangaroos (they’re stuffed animals), who travel with school family members, and write a newsletter journaling their exploits. The 7th graders use their map skills to determine total miles traveled.  Last year they traveled over 200,000 miles!

I have a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University in Elementary Education and, like all Illinois teachers, keep updated by attending a variety of workshops and seminars in my subject areas and educational trends.

I am reachable at school by phone or e-mail. I usually pick up phone messages in the morning between 7:00 and 7:30AM (sometimes after school). I check my e-mail Monday-Friday.  Feel free to contact me by note through your students.
