Saint Joseph School of Downers Grove
Mary Schmitt With St. Joseph School since 1995, Mrs. Schmitt continues to share her love for music with the K-8 students of St. Joseph.
Before coming to St. Joseph School, she taught in both Public and Catholic schools. She enjoyed staying at home and raising her children for 15 years, and now enjoys her teaching experiences at St. Joseph. As her family are alumni of St. Joseph School, the school holds a special place in her heart.
Mrs. Schmitt, a graduate of Benedictine University, holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education, with a certification in Elementary Education as well as Music Education. Coming from musical parents, in her younger years she and her siblings formed their own Irish music band, performing throughout the Chicago area. "From the time I was little, we would sit at my mom's feet and sing songs. My mom gave me the gift of music."
Schmitt's teaching philosophy is to encourage students to use the talents God has given them and to be the best they can be. She especially enjoys the "performance" part of her job! She has a lot of fun with the students and loves to see them shine.
Most known for her direction in the productions of both the annual Christmas Concert and the end-of-school-year all school performance of "VIP Day", she truly enjoys bringing out the special and unique God-given talents that our students can provide.
On a more personal note, Mrs. Schmitt enjoys singing, reading, cooking and spending time with family.
To contact Mrs. Schmitt, please leave a message with the school secretary or send a note through the school office.
