Saint Joseph School of Downers Grove
Elizabeth Wick I have always wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I come from a family of teachers so I think it is in my blood! In my first year of high school, one of my teachers came to me and asked if I would be willing to organize and coordinate a Tutoring Program for Inner City students from a Catholic grade school. I jumped at the chance even though it was on Saturday mornings. The children gradually grew in knowledge and confidence making it all worthwhile.
During the next four years, I came to realize that the personal connection made between the high school students and the grade school students was as important as the academics. I was hooked with this sometimes crazy, always-fulfilling profession of education.
This is my 27th year of teaching and my 7th year at St. Joseph School. I have a 6th grade Homeroom. I teach 6th grade Religion and Science, 7th grade Reading, and 8th grade US History.
Prior coming to St. Joseph School I had the opportunity to teach behavior-disordered children in a special needs school, be a long term sub for physically-handicapped children in a public high school, teach 7th and 8th grade in public schools, and teach 6th, 7th and 8th grade in Catholic schools.
I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education at Illinois State University and my Master’s Degree in Education at Benedictine University.
Teaching at St. Joe’s is a privilege because it is a caring, supportive, and engaging family. The students are active learners and considerate classmates. The parents are involved with their children and appreciate the value of education. The faculty is knowledgeable, understanding, and supportive. I feel truly blessed.
"The feeling remains that God is on the journey, too."
