2010 Crusader Track & Field Information

SJS is in the Suburban Parochial League for Track & Field.  The league has 20 teams, divided into three divisions based on school enrollment and track team enrollment.  We’re in the middle division, AA.
This year our first practice is Monday March 15 for 5th graders only, 6-7:30 in the school gym, with a parents meeting for any new 5th grade parents who are interested at 7:15 in the school hall.   The first practice for the full team is Thursday March 18, 4:30-6 pm at the school gym.
Watch the blog (www.SJSTrack.blogspot.com) for practice and meets times each week, including any last minute changes due to rain.

This year’s meet schedule:

4/24

at Brooks Middle School, Bolingbrook

5/1

At Westmont High School

5/8

Co-Ed Relays - at Brooks Middle School,

5/15

at Glenbard South or Glenbard West.  This is our Divisional Championship and also determines which athletes and relay teams qualify for the League Championship on 5/16.  Those who do not qualify for the League Championship may be able to compete in certain “open” events at the League Championship, depending on the number of available slots in each open event.

5/22

League Championship- Location TBD

Meet locations are subject to change, so please check the Blog each week for any updates.  If a meet is rained out, it probably will be moved to the following day (Sunday).
At each meet, each athlete usually will compete in at least one field event (high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, javelin or discus), and at least one running event (individual and relay races).   This will vary from meet to meet depending on the number of events.

Parent Volunteers

Parents must help at one meet either in the morning or afternoon session.  We will assign parents to the meets and post this list on the blog.  Please arrive at least 15 minutes before start time.  Start time usually is around 8:00 for JV and 12:00 for Varsity.  Check the Blog for start times each week since they can vary.

Dress

We’re outside most of the time at practices and all of the time at meets.  Until it warms up, the athletes should wear sweatpants and layered shirts and/or a jacket.  A smart rule is to overdress for the weather, especially at meets.

At meets, athletes wear our green team T-shirt, to be provided.  Athletes should wear darker shorts or sweats if they have them, such as black or navy blue.  This is not necessary but it makes it easier for coaches and parents to pick out our athletes from other green teams on the field.  We wear regular running shoes.  The league does not allow spikes.

Practice Attendance

Practice most weeks will be M, W and Th, 6:00 to 7:30 pm, but check the blog each week for the schedule.  We will also practice on Saturdays from late March through mid April.  Practices are at either the school or the Downers North HS track.  Watch the Blog for practice schedules and last minute changes in event of big rain.

We recognize many of the students have other commitments.  It is not necessary to give us notice when a student will miss practice, but it is important to give us at least two days notice when they know they will miss a meet so we can factor that into our lineup for the meet.
Depending on the number of events in each meet, we usually do not have trouble fitting all the kids into at least two events.  In meets where this is more difficult, practice attendance will be considered in our selections.

Coaches

Our coaches in 2010 are Sue Barrett, Jeff Gentile, Henry Jakobsze, Bob LeMay, John Lindeman, Laura McGrath, Joe Roth, Pete Schmit, Suzanne Shover, Brittany Styles, and Steve Harris (head coach).  If you’d like to coach, please let us know.  The more coaches we have, the easier it is to provide a safe, challenging and enjoyable program for the kids.

If any questions please call any of the coaches.  Steve Harris can be reached at 630-852-7369 or steveharris70@comcast.net
