Instead of a Parents Meeting on March 23, we are providing this sheet with general information on our track program. If anyone would like more information, we are glad to provide it. Please contact Steve Harris at the phone or e-mail shown below, or see me or any of our coaches at one of our practices.
SJS is in the Suburban Parochial League for Track & Field. The league has 20 teams, divided into three divisions based on school enrollment and track team enrollment. We are in the middle division, AA.
This year we have three “regular” meets and two championship meets, as usual. Check the Blog (www.SJSTrack.blogspot.com) each week for meet times and possible rain cancellations on the day of the meet. Our schedule:
| 4/18 | at Glenbard South |
| 4/25 | at Benet |
| 5/2 | at Glenbard South. This is our AA Divisional Championship and also determines which athletes and relay teams qualify for the League Championship on 5/16. Those who do not qualify for the League Championship may be able to compete in certain “open” events at the League Championship, depending on the number of available slots in each open event. |
| 5/9 | at Brooks Middle School, 350 Blair Lane, Bolingbrook |
| 5/16 | at Wheaton College – League Championship |
Meet locations are subject to change, so please check the Blog each week for any updates. If a meet is rained out, it probably will be moved to the following day (Sunday).
At each meet, each athlete usually will compete in at least one field event (high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, javelin or discus) and at least one running event (individual or relay races). This will vary from meet to meet depending on the number of events.
Download the list showing the volunteer dates for each family. We appreciate your commitment. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before start time. Start time usually is around 8:15 for JV and Noon for Varsity. Check the Blog for start times each week since they can vary.
We are outside most of the time at practices and all of the time at meets. Until it warms up, the athletes should wear sweatpants and layered shirts and/or a jacket. They should overdress for the weather, especially for the meets.
At meets, athletes wear the green team T-shirt, to be provided shortly. It helps if our kids wear darker shorts or sweats if they have them, such as black or navy blue. This is not necessary but it makes it easier for coaches and parents to pick out our athletes from other green teams on the field.
We wear regular running shoes. The league does not allow spikes.
Practice most weeks will be 6:00 to 7:30 pm, M, W and Th. No practice Thursday March 26 to allow attendance at the school’s Town Hall meeting. Practices are at either the school or Downers North’s track. Watch the Blog for practice schedules and last minute changes in event of big rain.
We recognize many of the students have other commitments. It is not necessary to give us notice when a student will miss practice, but it is important to give us at least two days notice when they know they will miss a meet so we can factor that into our lineup for the meet.
Depending on the number of events in each meet, we usually do not have trouble fitting all the kids into at least two events. In meets where this is more difficult, practice attendance will be considered in our selections.
